Google Apps Engine and using Packagetrackr in your web app

We are briefly mentioned in eWeek today. Unfortunately, the context of the article isn't exactly correct.

So, to clarify, we don't currently have an open API that can be easily integrated into your applications. We're in the final development and testing stages and plan to release the API soon.

We'll post more here once it's available.

In the meantime, if you would like to discuss the API, you can contact me directly.

Vista Sidebar Gadget

As we mentioned earlier today on Twitter, if you use our Vista sidebar gadget, you may be getting a consistent error message "Load package failed. Would you please try again?"

Last week, we implemented some backend security changes that have created the error as a side effect. Resolving the error on your machine is easy. Simply log out of the Sidebar gadget, from the settings menu, and then log back in.

Sorry for the inconvenience, we've made some changes that should prevent this in the future.

Thanks to Steven and Brian for bringing this to our attention.

Open Web Awards: Round 1 (VOTE FOR US!)

Thanks to everyone who nominated us in the Mashable 2nd Annual Open Web Awards. Because of your support, Packagetrackr has been included in both the Social Shopping and Mobile Applications categories in the competition.

If you've never heard of the Open Web Awards, in their inaugural run last year, they recognized the best new web apps. The winners included Facebook, Digg, Google, Meetup, Twitter, Netvibes, woot!, Last.fm and Mahalo. It's a great honor to compete; and this year, we think we've built a site worthy to win, but we need your votes to prove that.

On the mobile side, we have just updated our iPhone/iPod Touch interface to run in the full screen mode I blogged about last month (more on that later!) It's really great and is almost indistinguishable from a native iPhone application.

As for social shopping, let's face it, without Packagetrackr, online shopping is-- well, we think xkcd has the right idea...

You can vote in this round, once per day, in each category from now until Sunday, 30 NOV at 11:59PM PST.

Here's to Packagetrackr making you less crazy.

Thanks for your votes and your support!

Vote Packagetrackr!

It's been about a week since the Presidential elections here in the States. So by now you are undoubtedly either tired of trying to see if President Elect Obama signs for his own packages, or you abandoned your plan to succeed from the Union when you realized that no carrier would deliver packages to your house sovereign nation.

Luckily, we've got the perfect way you can still practice your democratic skills! We need your nominations for the Mashable 2nd Annual Open Web Awards.

We think that we've sufficiently mashed enough stuff around here to qualify for both the Mobile Application category (hello, iPhone users!) and the Social Shopping category (We're social! You send feedback, I respond!)

We'd be honored if you'd consider submitting the below forms to show us your support! Nominations close on Sunday, 16 November 2008 at 11:59pm PST.

Chromed out

Packagetrackr user and all around Good Samaritan, Richard pointed out to us recently that it's now possible to run web apps in a chrome-free full page in Mobile Safari.

We gave it a whirl last weekend and we love the extra screen space. Unfortunately, as others have noted, it requires some retooling of the site pages to prevent page changes from loading in regular windows. For those of you interested in the details: more info here, here and here [ADC Login Req'd]

We'll let you know when it's ready, as you have to add Packagetrackr anew to your home screen, but in the meantime, here are screenshots.

What do you want from us?

No, really, we wanna know!

We've launched a page on UserVoice. Head over there to vote on what carriers we should support next, or to make other suggestions for us. Perhaps you have an opinion on what the official sandwich spread of Packagetrackr.com should be. Hooray! One less thing we have to decide at lunchtime.

Whatever you think about the site, you can still contact us via the feedback form, (We love all the feedback! Keep it coming!) but in terms of prioritization, we think it's best to look at what you all are voting for the most.

Happy Tracking Voicing!

Tip of the hat

Today's tip of the hat is for Vlad. Not only has he made a cool stats plugin for Wordpress, he gave us a thumbs up on his blog. Thanks, man!
